The Little Book of Coaching [review]
by Ken Blanchard and Don Shula
Carol McManus
Printer-Friendly Format

This little gem is only 117 pages (with lots of white space!).  It is an hour's worth of reading that will pay big dividends.

It is chock full of quotations - some inspirational, some motivational, some thought-provoking, but all applicable to your business.  Each is followed by two or three paragraphs or anecdotes by the authors to anchor the meaning of the quote and move you forward.

Here's an example:
Quote:  "There is no such thing as a minor mistake."

Followed by:  "Mistakes cannot be tolerated.  If the team or individual does something wrong, the coach needs to blow the whistle, tell them what they did wrong, and make them do it again.  Somehow, as a coach, you continually have to redirect your team back to the standards forgood performance."

I recommend buying it, reading it, marking the pages that have the most meaning to your situation, and then build the content into the next opportunity to communicate with your own team.  This can be used by owners at a managers' meeting, by managers at a sales meeting, or trainers in the classroom.
